midi-cv faq

What would the size and weight be?

30cm x 30cm x 20cm, 5 kilo.

Would it have a tuning knob?

coarse - +- 4 octave

fine - +- 2 semitone

Is the oscillator temperature compensated?

the oscillator has passive compensation.

you can expect to need to tune the unit any time the temperature changes more than +- 5 celsius to maintain most accurate tuning. drift can be corrected with a front panel tuning knob, however scale drift will need to be corrected for by adjusting a trimmer.

offset drift is about 50 cents per c, scale drift should be under +- 500ppm.

Will it run from batteries or will it need power transformer?

requires a $5 or 3.50e wall-wart or line-lump 15vac. you could also mount a mains transformer inside and use the standard C14 IEC connector if you want to do this yourself. i will not do this, i can not supply the power source.

What currency would it be sold in?

the price will not be fixed, it will be adjusted based upon cost and to manage optimum supply/demand. the target cost of $200-$300 is in canadian dollars, which are currently equal to united states dollars.

i'll accept any money-order or cheque. i'd prefer if you could pay via pay-pal which works with many cards around the world. if you do not own a credit card, gift cards are available in most countries (such as a master-card, visa or others) which you can pay cash for a one-time use. this is similar to a calling-card. i wont ship anything obviously unless i've been paid - with certain money-orders or cheques this could mean several weeks delay.

How will it be shipped?

i'll ship using post/mail for small packages. cost is about $50 at most, to anywhere in the world. cost in north america should be significantly less. the synth itself will be $200 for those on kvr, but counting additional expense of shipping, applicable taxes and your power supply it might be in total up to $280. i'm not selling production units yet, only prototypes. if you're unsure about getting a prototype, don't.

How can i get one?

if you haven't talked to me already you probably can't at this point. keep an eye out for the time when these are offered on ebay or when higher quality production begins.

What are the features of the synth?

the synth has an architecture similar to the well known sh-101, with some additional features.

  • both log and linear glide, both with a "fingered / gated" mode.
  • the lfo has adjustable slope/pulse-width.
  • the lfo has a range selection for low/audio range.
  • the mixer section allows +12db over-drive into the filter to get harder timbres.
  • the filter is selectable between low/band/high.
  • modulation inputs into the filter have a neg - zero - pos range, so you can invert the envelope by moving the knob counter-clockwise, for example. likewise for keyboard track and lfo inputs.
  • the filter also has a audio-rate modulation input from the mixer called "inp.fm".
  • midi-cv functionality, and the midi-cv has pitch bend, as well as a filter cutoff output allowing velocity or pitchbend to be routed to cutoff and so on.
  • lowest/highest/first modes are selectable for the note-logic in addition to the "last" mode as on the sh-101.
  • custom software can be designed to implement any types of arpeggiators or modulation outputs.
